Ameyoko (アメ横) is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name Ameyoko is a short form for Ameya Yokocho (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, Ame also stands for America, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two.Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Opening hours and closing days depend on individual stores, but stores typically open around 10:00 and close around 19:00. Many stores remain closed on selected Wednesdays.
Here we are going to introduce few stores in Ameyoko that we recommend you visit if you are ever in the area.
Shimura Shoten is famous for its chocolate bargain sales, called “chocolate tatakiuri”, one of Ameyoko’s most famous sites. The sight of store workers energetically shouting “1,000 yen! 1,000 yen!”, “And one more for free!” as they fill up bags with sweets is attracting attention not only in Japan but from overseas as well.
It’s said that the big bags filled with sweets which are sold for 1,000 JPY would cost more than 2,500 JPY if you bought them at a supermarket or convenience store. The bags are often filled with sweets other than chocolate, so if you’re after a lot of sweets at a cheap price, this is the place to go.
A store selling both Japanese and overseas makeup at a reasonable price. As well as the great price, what is really amazing about this store is the product lineup. If there is a product that you're after but you can’t find it your local drug store or cosmetics store, you’ll probably be able to find it here. For women, just browsing the shop can also be great fun, and who knows, you might find some great deals as well!
POPGIRL in Ueno sells women's clothing and accessories store at an unbelievable 50%-90% of the regular price. Regularly covered in magazines and on TV as the place to go to buy cute clothing at a good price, POPGIRL is incredibly popular with young women. You can also find shows and bags as well as clothes at a reasonable price, so you can get a complete look at a great price. You can buy clothes for as little as 300 JPY, so if you’re looking to add a bit of Japanese fashion to your wardrobe, you can do it without breaking the bank.
The Ameyoko Central Building is the symbol of Ameyoko. Each floor has a variety of tenants such as apparel, golf and jewelry stores, but what we recommend the most is the food court in the basement. There you can find all sorts of rare ingredients, such as different cuts of meat or ingredients from Asia. They sell such a wide variety of products that even professional chefs come to stock up on products. On the first floor is a restaurant where you can enjoy dishes made with Asian ingredients, so why not drop by for a meal while you are shopping?
